HYDRATION FOR SUMMER PRACTICE

Updated: Jul 27, 2019

It’s starting to feel a lot like summer here on Cape Cod!

With warmer weather on the horizon, your experience in the Yoga room will certainly feel … different. The good news is that it only takes a handful of classes to acclimate to practicing Hot Yoga during the summer months. Did you know that practicing throughout the summer months is one of the best times to improve your practice? The added humidity naturally occurring here on Cape Cod will allow you to warm up faster and experience more flexibility in your postures. It really is the best time to get the most out of your practice!

Still stressing about the heat? No problem. We’ve put together some easy to accomplish tips to help you stay consistent with your Yoga practice this summer:

Get here earlier. Did you know that Hot Yoga Cape Cod has early morning classes five days a week? Join us for classes at 6:30AM Monday through Friday. At this hour, the sun has just started to come up and the morning air is still crisp. Less temperature and less humidity outside means a more predictable experience in the Yoga room. Get out of bed early and beat the heat! Plus, you’ll be beach ready before breakfast.

Try some of our other class offerings. In addition to our Bikram Hot Yoga classes, we also offer Hot Pilates and Hot Power Flow classes that are practiced in a room heated to about 95 degrees. Our Yin Yoga classes are practiced in a room heated to about 80 degrees with the windows wide open. Something as simple as a few degrees difference in temperature can have a big impact on how you feel in the Yoga room during the summer months. Try something new, supplement your Bikram Yoga practice, and keep moving all summer long.

Focus on your hydration. Everyone knows that good hydration leads to a better experience in the Yoga room. This focus becomes even more important during the summer months. In fact, most of us know that during the summer months we must increase our water intake to adjust to the temperature increase outside. Combine this with a heated practice and you have a little extra, but simple, work to do.

Hydration is not as simple as just drinking more water. When you sweat, you lose more than just water. You lose electrolytes, trace minerals, and sodium. Without these in the body, you are not able to rehydrate properly (which is why people who are suffering from actual dehydration can’t solve the problem by drinking a glass of water). Drinking quality water in combination with consuming sources of electrolytes and trace minerals is key (think leafy greens, berries, green vegetables and cucumbers).

Confused? We have gone the extra mile to stock our retail fridge with the highest quality beverages to help you stay hydrated and satiated after a heated class. Simply consuming one or more of these delicious treats after class will help you recover faster and stay hydrated!

  • Ultima Replenisher. These are high quality powdered electrolytes that you can add to your water before, during, or after your Yoga class. There is no added sugar. If you find yourself struggling towards the end of class, cramping after class, or just taking longer than normal to recover, pop one of these into your water bottle and experience the difference.

  • Fresh Pressed Juice. The key here is phytonutrients and trace minerals. As you sweat in class, you lose trace minerals as you lose water. Drinking a fresh pressed juice right after class is one of the best ways to replenish these nutrients quickly and in vast amounts. The juicing process extracts the fiber from the fruits and vegetables which allows you to almost instantly absorb the nutrients upon drinking. Plus, removing the fiber allows you consume nutrients from more vegetables than you would be able to eat in one sitting. Our juices are 100% raw and freshly pressed by Hometown Juice. They are delicious, nutrient dense, and the perfect recovery drink to enjoy after class.

  • Local Kombucha. Love something bubbly right after class? Treat yourself to one of our locally crafted Cape Cod Kombuchas! These are the highest quality Kombucha products you can buy on Cape Cod. Kombucha is packed with probiotics which will help improve your digestion and gut health. Plus, you’ll get a huge dose of antioxidan

  • Smoothies. Talk to any athlete and they will tell you that the best time to replenish after a workout is within thirty-minutes of completing the workout. Your energy depleted muscles need to refuel. When you consume protein, your muscles are flushed with amino acids (which aid in muscle recovery while preventing lean muscle loss). Protein also blocks the production of cortisol which increases muscle soreness in the body and allows you to feel better faster. Our bottled protein smoothies are made from high quality plant protein which is easy on your digestive system and will lead to decreased inflammation in the body. Our smoothies are great to enjoy after an intense Inferno Hot Pilates workout.
